She is a motivational speaker, author, award-winning TV producer and host, filmmaker, and is passionate about helping people make a positive impact on their health and overall well-being. She has appeared on MTV, Vh1, Discovery, CMT, C-Span, FOX, and many other national television and radio shows.  Shemane got her start in media as a radio newscaster in 1980.

red_border_smAfter discovering her home, which was once featured on MTV Cribs, was contaminated with toxic mold, Shemane developed a life-threatening illness.  She took a year off from teaching group fitness classes and focused on regaining her health.  How she healed herself and her family through alternative remedies is miraculous!  Once dependent on oxygen and barely able to walk,  Shemane has fully recovered and is now an international Zumba® fitness presenter who is on a mission to share her passion for healthy living with others. She  developed Zumba® in the Circuit for two of the top ten fitness franchises, Curves® and Zumba®, and has written training manuals and starred in training videos for fitness instructors.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Radio/TV and Film, and a Master’s degree in Metaphysics, Shemane is taking her passion for helping others to the Internet airways at her website where she shares her honest views about spirituality, faith, family, fitness, fashion, politics, healthy living and her twenty-seven year marriage to rock ‘n roll legend Ted NugentTed & Danielle Nugent Wedding

Shemane and Ted created a charity called Freedom’s Angels, which helps wounded soldiers and their loved ones. They also serve on the board of directors for Operation Finally Home, an organization which provides mortgage-free homes for veterans. Their support for the military and a love for dogs prompted Ted and Shemane to partner with K9s for Warriors, which trains shelter dogs to assist veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

When she is not teaching fitness classes or helping with charitable causes, Shemane enjoys writing books and screenplays. She wrote ‘Married to a Rock Star” (Lyons Press), and a wild game cookbook she co-authored with her husband, “Kill It & Grill It” (Regnery).  Her 3rd book “4 Minutes A Day, Rock ‘n Roll Your Way to HAPPY” will be published later this year.

Shemane is producing a film that she wrote about her son, Rocco, who is the light and joy of her life.

Here’s a little info about my life and my passions.  First, my name is Shemane.  There’s no “r”.  It comes from the movie “El Cid” with Charlton Heston (check out his book comment to me!), and Sophia Loren.  My parents got creative and named me after Sophia Loren’s character, which is spelled much differently in the movie.

Michigan is my home state.  I grew up in an average Midwest town.  We had a river in our backyard, and my brother, Guy, and I swam pretty much every day in the summer.  At the time, he probably hated it but I wanted to do everything he did.  So, I climbed trees, raced motorcycles, and swam competitively.  Compared to my big brother, I was just “okay”, but I won over one hundred medals, ribbons and trophies for athletics and was a state champion swimmer twice.

shemane_mylife_borderContinuing the athletic saga in high school and college, I became a gymnast and a cheerleader.  Like many, I packed on the Freshmen Fifteen (pounds) and then worked out til I lost it.  Just about that time, “aerobics” became the new exercise craze.  Yes, I was a proud owner of leg warmers and a thong leotard.  Somewhere, there is a video of me teaching probably one of the first group exercise classes on cable TV ever!  The big hairstyle alone will scare you!

My college degree was in Radio, TV and film.  My first job was as a newscaster for college radio, then as sports reporter for COX cable in Gainesville, Florida, covering the Gatornationals.  Little known fact:  For my senior class project we had to make music videos.  At the time, there was also a contest on MTV to make Madonna’s video.  I decided to do both. Out of thousands of entries, my video was one chosen to air on MTV (3 times! Not that I counted). My professor, who was typically tough (especially on women) gave me an “A.”

Upon graduation, I got a job as a radio traffic reporter for a rock ‘n roll radio station in Detroit.  The only thing my brother and I didn’t have in common was that I didn’t really like rock ‘n roll music.  Whereas, he’s been wearing concert t-shirts for forty years.

Only a month after I started working as a traffic reporter, with my desk nestled next to that of couple
author Mitch Albom, Ted filled in for the morning crew for an entire week.  On radio, your job is to talk – a lot. For four hours a day, I got to know Ted Nugent. He was funny, witty, didn’t drink or smoke and seemed to be a doting dad to daughter Sasha and son Toby. Still, Ted asked me out and I said no. My boss asked me to reconsider, and always the team player, I complied.

Ted and I first met on October 3, 1988.  We were engaged at our radio station’s Christmas party a few months later, and married January 21, 1989.

My dreams of becoming the next Diane Sawyer were crushed, but I utilized my skills filming Ted’s hunts long before outdoor shows were prevalent.  For two decades, we have co-hosted and co-produced the award-winning television show “Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild”, now on the Outdoor Channel.

Our son, Rocco, was born on July 22, 1990.  He is the pride and joy of my life.  Being a mother has been the most gratifying thing in my life, by far.

But the road to happiness is often filled with potholes.

jetTed and I have had some pretty substantial obstacles to tackle.  In my book “Married to a Rock Star,” I chronicle some of the trials and tribulations we’ve endured.  It hasn’t been easy.  No marriage is. And like other marriages, I don’t always agree with everything my husband says or does.  But I’m learning to find my voice, which is a pretty big deal for me.

The emotional challenges were minimal, however, compared to losing our health.

We discovered our MTV Cribs home was contaminated with toxic mold in between the walls.  Over a course of two years, my health deteriorated.  Debilitating migraines plagued me daily, as did chronic fatigue and insomnia.  Ted and Rocco had similar symptoms too.  Doctors told us our problems were stress related, which seemed quite possible.  There was something more though.  My investigative skills finally paid off…a little too late. Ted and I had four different types of mold in our blood stream.  Rocco had severe asthma and  I was diagnosed with having pre-emphysema.  We destroyed our home and moved to Texas where I could be near a medical facility that dealt with toxic exposures.

It was a year before I could even consider exercising. I discovered Zumba® fitness and it changedstage my life immensely.  I regained my strength and stamina and found a workout that was both fun and effective.  It came along at the perfect time, too.  Rocco graduated high school and left home to pursue his dreams. It filled my heart with so much joy to spread my love for fitness and health with so many others.  I have been blessed to be able to develop programs for Zumba® and travel the world doing what I love.
Never a dull moment, my mother always says.  I have trouble with finding a novel that’s more exciting than my life. Oh yes, and that’s another activity I enjoy….writing. Writing takes me away from some of the trying times. My imagination is vivid and endless. I’ve written three screenplays, one of which has been optioned by my son’s production company.  And there’s nothing more I’d rather do than spend time with my son.

Very inspiring. Toxic mold is finally getting some mainstream attention. We would love to read about some of the things you did to get well, and find out what facility in Texas helped you regain your health. So many people are plagued with this and practitioners with the medical knowledge to treat mold illness are few and far between.

Thanks Lillian! I saw Dr. William Rea at the Environmental Health Center in Dallas. Toxic mold exposure is truly becoming an epidemic. Sadly.

Shemane- Your story of regaining your health is exactly the “medicine” I needed. We run a 1280 acre regenerative agriculture ranch (our lifelong dream) and learned recently that toxic mold in our new home is making our family very ill (especially our children). Due to the level of issues/background involved, there are extensive legal and medical implications. Any insights that you have from your experience are very appreciated! (As an aside- we love our heritage pigs and work closely with Farm To Consumer Legal Defense Fund to continue to protect local farms).

      Hi Pam!
So sorry to hear about your struggle. In my book (to be released Nov 10) “4 Minutes A Day, Rock ‘n Roll Your Way to Happy”, I go into more detail about the functional medicine that saved my life. I was able to heal myself and my family with things like Vitamin IV and Oxygen. Try to find a doctor who is open to functional medicine. Thank goodness you discovered the problem.

      Many blessings…

I was able to take a session with Dr. Hyman at the Zumba Convention in August and I have been moving in the direction of functional medicine for the past year. I have slowly been changing my eating habits to more natural and healthy choices. I am taking the Plate course and want to help others find a healthier and happier life. I was so thrilled to meet you and take your Circuit session. I LOVED it! Now I am working on adding that badge to my elearning and want to bring it to my studio. You mentioned possibly coming to Sycamore and doing a class. Is this still a possibility? I want to promote the class before I actually start teaching it in November. Thanks so much for the inspiration to move in this direction!!!

Congratulations on making healthier choices & starting Zumba’s Plate! So glad you enjoyed the Zumba in the Circuit session at the Zumba Instructor Convention! I would love to come teach a Zumba in the Circuit class in Sycamore! Perhaps we can do it after my book launch, November 10. Unfortunately I’m already booked up this November though. ; \

Hi, Shemane! Thank you for sharing your story & tips to health & happiness. It is true if you lack one you’ll quickly lose the other. I first saw you appear on the Dana Loesch show and thought WOW, what a fit, beautiful woman. I am currently trying to get my husband to check our home for mold. Our land has been in his family for over 100 years, the current generation is beginning to sell off their plots & we don’t want to follow that trend but building a new home ( which I believe we do need ) is not financially feasible at this time, nor is leaving our home ( I’ve been investigating shipping container homes to give him hope that could be affordable in a couple years of saving ). I’ve heard of mold kits from Home Depot, did you use something like that to investigate your issues or was it all discovered through blood work at your Dr.’s office? Would my pediatrician have that testing material on hand? I’ve asked him what he thought of my children’s increase in respiratory infections, could they be caused by mold exposure, but unfortunately he based his answer on info from the CDC and they do NOT consider mold an epidemic or a great threat to the public. Your health deteriorated over two years, was that how long the mold had been present or did you experience an accumulation of mold exposure over a longer period of time & for two years your health spiraled out of control? Someone had blown insulation into our home & some of those little covers popped off the siding allowing for our 50-60 mph winds to blow water into the siding behind our walls. I want to remove a part if interior wall to show and shock my husband but I fear making exposure to the problem worse by disturbing the spores, but he’s in denial and I want to shock him into reality before this gets any worse. Your a multi-talented woman and an inspiration, thank you so much. I’m a housewife. Love to belly dance. I exhaust myself by lobbying Congress & Senators to reiterate Constitutional principles ( WHAT AN UPHILL BATTLE THAT IS ). I also TRY to educate others to the loss of freedoms were experiencing, but it seems that normalcy bias doesnt allow them to grasp those concepts. 🙁

    • Reply Shemane Nugent October 23, 2015 at 11:24 pm

Things have changed since our house was contaminated. Now there are kits you can get at hardware stores to give you basic information. Most doctors won’t test for mold – you may have to go to a specialist – a toxicologist.
Best thing to do is to consult a trusted mold remediator.

      Keep up the belly dancing!!
      God bless!

Hello Shemane- Your piece about your issues with black mold really struck a chord with me. I’m with a company called “Green Home Solutions”. We do Mold remediation (among other services) without toxic chemicals or demolition, and are embarking on a campaign to raise awareness about Mold and encourage people to have their homes’ air tested. Mold is too often hidden or invisible, and we find doctors rarely look to our environment instead of treating symptoms. We want to change that. I’m wondering whether you might be interested in speaking with us. I think we share a common goal. Thank you.

Question about mold and your great beet juice
    This message hasn’t been sent.
Saved on: Sat 1/28/2017 1:40 PM

First thank you for sharing your mold story. My daughter 25 year old daughter and her family bought a home 2 years ago. When she 14 She had to have her spleen removed as a result of rare blood disorder so…her immune system isn’t like average person.
For the past two years she has been very very sick. She gets a little better, then within 2-3 weeks she is very sick and has pneumonia again. The problem has gotten so severe Mayo clinic has gotten involved and all the tests keep coming back ok. A few weeks ago she asked what to get to kill the mold that has started growing on the basement walls. I said you have mold on the walls? Then like a lightening bolt…your story popped into my head! We had air quality tests done in their home and….while it’s not black mold, it’s still high levels of aspergillus/penicillium.
After detective work, I have found that it too can cause mold toxicity and allergic reactions. Her symptoms match up to the point it is scarey. I have a couple questions.
    1. How did they diagnose it?They have done bronchoscopies and even mandbular scopy. She too has been diagnosed chroic bronchitis and possible emphysema.
    2. How did you get the Dr to listen to you. I have even gone with her with air quality test in tow. They say well it’s not helping but..

But what! She has all the symptoms! She has 3 little kids that need their mom! Her middle child that is 4, has just been diagnosed with Asthma. Again we heard, well….this could be a coincidence. Really! We have gotten them out of their house and had them come here. Like you…I had them leave with just their clothes. We wanted to try to save their clothes because it’s so expensive…but decided since she seems to be feeling a little better not to chance it. So thank you, thank you for sharing your story.
Next question…your beet juice, where do you get it? Love you and Ted!

Hi Dina! I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. It is very difficult for doctors to truly understand the devastating effects of mold toxicity. I went to the Environmental Health Center in Dallas which does functional medicine. We had many extensive blood tests. A toxicologist determined that I had pre-emphysema. I can tell you that I’ve never felt better in my entire life after taking the super food nutrition from Isagenix. It is based on a cellular blood cleanse, which is perhaps why it resonated with me. Please consider getting this for your daughter!! Here is the link to the products so you can research it for yourself:

    Hi Shemane!!
I just started listening to your podcasts and I’ve learned so much, thank you.
When I listened to your story about the mold in your Michigan home, it created some alarm in me. My wife an I have a second home on our farm in upstate NY. The house is off-grid and under renovation. As a result, we’ve battling water, dampness and condensation issues non-stop for 15 years. Recently, I discovered some black mold in those areas that always seem to get wet. We bleech it like mad but I don’t know if that is enough. Aside from putting and end to the moisture, is there any suggestions about tackling the mold issue? I am concerned for my pets health as well as ours of course. I’m a lead vocalist and an athlete so I need my lungs!!
I am a Podcast host myself (Motorcycle Men Podcast) and I was surprised and joyed to hear you used to race motocross! Do you still ride? Hope so!! Maybe we could discuss an interview on my show. We could talk rider fitness!
Well, anyway, I appreciate what you are doing and I look forward to more of your podcasts. Good job!!

You and Ted are an inspiration to so many! My husband is a vet and watches Spirit of the wild religiously. Ted is his hero. I am trying to save money so that someday he can go on hunt with Ted. That is a dream of his. Thank you for all you and Ted do for all veterans and hunters.

You and Uncle Ted are GREAT AMERICANS! I will never understand why preformers be they musicians or actors with incomes like your family sit idly by and allow the goverment to tax them so outrageously! They’re aren’t enough of you to fund this redistribution of your hard earned money to feed the ever growing number of “pigs at the trough”! Keep supporting Ted as you do so well and God Bless you and your family.

God bless you and your family! I suffer from chronic Lyme disease. I would love to thank Ted for an article, where he spoke about the devastating affects caused from lyme disease. It’s hard to fight a battle, when the CDC, Dr’s, and government won’t acknowledge the severity of lyme disease and won’t change their guidelines for treatments. This is an epidemic like AIDS, with over 400,000 infected yearly. They are predicting close to 1,000,000, being infected in the next few years. There are still no accurate tests, guidelines for treatments, no cure for a disease that was first acknowledged in the 1970’s. I’m fighting daily to try to get my health back, searching for a miracle treatment. Because Lyme is frowned upon by Dr’s, Infectious disease Dr’s, etc, and then, even some family members don’t believe in it, causing heartache, when you’re trying so hard to get well. I’ve been sick since 2008, and misdiagnosed until 2011. I tested very positive for chronic Lyme disease. There are so many that are suffering from a disease that has been brushed under the rug because lyme mimics other diseases so the pharmaceutical companies, CDC, Universities, get money for all the other illnesses, when it’s actually lyme disease that needs to be addressed and is causing the people to become so sick. Look at Kris Kristofferson. He was diagnosed with alzheimers disease, when in fact, he had lyme disease. Under our Skin, is a great documentary, to understand lyme disease, the problems with our government and why we aren’t getting the help and treatments needed, to have a normal life again. We just want our lives back that we once loved. Any publicity we get, helps make more aware of the dangers from a tick bite. Please, thank your husband, Uncle Ted, for advocating and telling his story about knowing how dangerous lyme disease can be! God bless you and Uncle Ted, for everything you do to help others!!
